Education
The PAWS educational mission is to help children learn how to be responsible and caring towards their pets. We offer to visit classes to give demonstrations on proper pet care and nutrition, bite prevention, service dog roles, reading with a pet, and other educational experiences relating to pets. We also provide pet friendly coloring books to local vets who visit schools to give the kids something to take home to share with their families.
KIND News
The KIND News is an award winning publication, which is produced by the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education in cooperation with the Humane Society of the United States. Through interesting and informative articles, KIND News teaches children to treat each other, animals, and the environment responsibly, with kindness, respect, and compassion. Written in a captivating, lively style, the paper fosters a love of reading and provides opportunities for children to utilize their math and writing skills. Projects, celebrity interviews, and fun activities round out the publication and make it one that children look forward to receiving each month.
Adopt-A-Classroom
Under the PAWS “Adopt-A-Classroom” Program, a teacher and his/her class will receive a year’s subscription to KIND News. The subscription includes 32 copies of the newspaper plus a teacher’s guide sent to the classroom each month, September through May. In addition, the teacher will receive an annual source book entitled KIND Teacher, which features reproducible worksheets, a classroom poster and a calendar of historical trivia, fun facts, and tips on helping animals and the environment.
During the current school year, PAWS is providing almost 70 Garrett County classrooms (public and home schooled) with KIND News subscriptions. PAWS has received some very positive feedback from teachers currently enrolled in the Adopt-A-Classroom Program. Correspondence from teachers and children alike indicate that they look forward to the monthly distribution of the KIND News and enjoy the activities and discussion material in each issue.
